Thanksgiving - twice!

On Thanksgiving Day, we had Grandma and Grandpa over for a wonderful gnocchi-broccoli-rab dinner. And for dessert (ht to Nate) a yummy pumpkin cheesecake. Grandma played a few dollars on the slot machine and came away empty handed. Neither she nor I have won the jackpot since they moved out here.

And then on Friday we had Julian and Maria and Katie over for dinner. Marianne cooked an organic, free-range turkey, which was excellent, as was the gravy, mashed potatoes, pumpkin rolls, cranberry relish, etc! A real feast. We also tried out the porron, and as you can see Quentin is pretty good at it!

We're thankful for the good food and family and friends. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Grandpa - Veteran's Day, then and now

I went over to the Worthington today for the Veteran's Day ceremony. Grandpa carried a Navy flag and there were quite a few Veterans there. Mostly men and a few women. It was a nice program. They read the stories of each of the Veterans, and it was interesting to hear. I learned that women who stayed home had to forego using nylon stockings, because all the nylon was needed for parachutes, etc. So, they used what was called "leg paint" to make it look like they had nylons on - even with a stripe down the back for a seam! I think for the older World War II vets, it brings back many memories. I also scanned an old photo from Grandpa of him on the USS Remora submarine in the North Atlantic from when he was serving.
