Italy trip target birds

Marianne and I are going to Italy to visit Quentin and travel together. So, I needed to figure out what might be a good target bird or two. Given that we'll be there in late March, it seemed best to stick with resident species, as migrants may not yet have arrived. So, here are my picks:

Common Kingfisher (which isn't all that common from what I gather) .and Eurasian Green Woodpecker . I am looking forward to time with Quentin, good red wine, a bit of history, some nice parks and hikes, and now, seeing one or both of my target birds!

Am I right that sometimes they use the word "common" in a bird name to distinguish it from the "great" bird of the same basic species? Like, common in size, not common in occurrence? I feel like I know something like that, but it might be a different word? Either way, sounds awesome!

Nate - I'm not aware of any general patterns in the use of common versus great. A lot of birds in the U.S. have had name changes over the years to separate them from those in Europe. For example, the settlers came here and saw a bird that reminded them of the robin from Europe. So, to clarify, our robin is now officially known as the American Robin. But I think you are right in that "common" does not necessarily denote common in occurrence. Fun stuff, eh?
